Politics

Senegal is a secular republic with a strong presidency, weak legislature, weak judiciary, and multiple political parties. Under the 2001 constitution, presidents serve for 5 years and are limited to two terms.  The president is elected by popular vote and appoints a prime minister of their choice.

The National Assembly is elected every five years and shares legislative power with the executive branch. It consists of 150 seats, 90 of which are elected by direct popular vote and 60 by proportional representation via party lists.
