Summary

A major humanitarian crisis is brewing in Somalia and elsewhere in the region, and the situation is becoming more desperate with every passing day. Some within the UN have even branded the food insecurity of Somalia, Yemen, Nigeria, and South Sudan as the greatest humanitarian crisis the world has faced since 1945.

Background

Somalia has been experiencing an unprecedented drought since 2015, and the humanitarian situation has started deteriorating quickly over the past few months.

According to the United Nations, around 6 million of Somalia’s 10.8 million people are suffering from acute food insecurity and in need of outside assistance. Around 3 million of these people are in need of urgent life-saving assistance, raising the grim possibility of widespread famine in the year to come.
